Description
Title of the invention: WAGON ADAPTER FOR CONNECTING A WAGON BODY TO A BEARING Technical field of the invention The present invention relates to the field of bearing adapters for a wagon.
STATE OF THE PRIOR ART A wagon generally comprises a bogie frame provided with a pair of lateral frames on each side, having jaws opening downwards. A bearing adapter can be moved vertically inside the jaws and rests on a bearing mounted on a wagon axle carrying a wheel of said wagon. The bearing adapter thus constitutes a rigid connection between the bogie frame of the wagon and the bearing. Typically, a bearing for a wagon axle fits around a journal at the end of the wagon axle, where it is mounted between a support ring assembly and a ferrule.
However, the wagon adapter can move relative to the bearing. The wagon adapter may be misaligned relative to the landing when the wagon is passing on turning lanes. This results in unexpected wear of certain parts, in particular the ears of lateral channels engaging with one ear of a jaw of the bogie frame, which reduces their useful life.
The load applied by the bogie frame through the adapter may not be well distributed over the bearing, in particular on the rolling elements when the bearing is of the rolling bearing type. This results in wear on the inside and outside surfaces of the wagon adapter as well as bearing failure.
These and other problems are solved by embodiments of the present invention.
Summary of the invention [0006] To this end, the invention relates to a wagon adapter intended to radially connect a wagon body to a bearing. The wagon adapter comprises two lateral channels each delimited by a pair of opposite ears and a lateral guide surface perpendicular to said opposite ears. The lateral channels are provided to cooperate with the wagon body. The wagon adapter comprises two front flanges which project inwardly from the internal surface, and which delimit with the internal surface a housing for said bearing. The wagon adapter includes an inner surface acting as a bearing seat for said bearing. The wagon adapter includes an outer surface which is adapted to be in direct radial contact with the wagon body.
According to the invention, said lateral guide surfaces of the lateral channels, in cross section through a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the bearing, are curved.
[0008] Such an arrangement improves the useful life of the wagon adapter and the bearing by reducing wear. The curved external lateral guide surfaces of the wagon adapter compensate for the relative misalignment between the wagon body and the landing. The load applied by the bogie frame via the adapter is distributed uniformly over the bearing, in particular on the rolling elements when the bearing is of the rolling bearing type.
Such an arrangement improves the useful life of the wagon adapter and the bearing by preventing relative misalignment and wear.
According to other aspects of the invention which are advantageous but not compulsory, such a wagon adapter may include one or more of the following characteristics:
The internal surface has for example a concave shape of constant radius so as to rest on the bearing.
Said external surface of the wagon adapter, in cross section through the axis of rotation of the bearing, is curved.
Said external surface of the wagon adapter is cylindrical or spherical.
The external surface of the wagon adapter is flat.
The lateral guide surfaces of the lateral channels are cylindrical.
The lateral guide surfaces of the lateral channels are spherical.
The wagon adapter is made of metal, for example by casting. For example, the wagon adapter is made of cast steel or cast iron.
According to another aspect, the invention relates to a wagon adapter assembly comprising a wagon adapter according to any one of the preceding embodiments, a bearing mounted inside the wagon adapter, a ring support intended to come into axial contact with the bearing at a first side and a set of end pieces provided to come into axial contact with the bearing at another side, opposite the first side.
According to one embodiment, the bearing comprises at least one internal ring and at least one external ring mounted in radial contact with the internal surface of the wagon adapter.
According to one embodiment, the bearing comprises at least one row of rolling elements arranged between raceways provided on the inner and outer rings.
According to one embodiment, the internal ring of the bearing is manufactured in two parts separated axially by an axial spacer.
According to another aspect, the invention relates to a wagon axle comprising a wagon adapter assembly according to any one of the preceding embodiments, a shaft being rotatably mounted about an axis of rotation relative to a wagon adapter inside said bearing. The shaft includes a first end mounted radially inside the support ring and a second end opposite the first end and fixed to the end piece assembly. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear on examining the detailed description of nonlimiting embodiments and the appended drawings in which:
[Fig.l] is a perspective view of a wagon axle according to the invention; and [fig-2] is an axial cross section of the wagon axle of Figure 1.
Detailed description of the invention If we refer to Figures 1 and 2, a wagon axle 10 is provided to connect the bogie frame of a wagon to the wheels (not shown). The wagon axle 10 comprises a shaft 12 (in dotted lines in FIG. 2), mounted for rotation about an axis of rotation X10 relative to a wagon adapter 14. The wagon adapter 14 is fixed to the frame of wagon bogie, the shaft 12 being fixed to the bogie.
A bearing 16 is provided radially between the wagon adapter 14 and the shaft 12. As illustrated in FIG. 2, the bearing 16 is of the rolling bearing type and includes an internal ring 18 mounted on the shaft 12 , an outer ring 20 mounted inside the wagon adapter 14 and two rows of rolling elements 22a, 22b, for example rollers, arranged between raceways provided on the inner and outer rings 18, 20 The inner ring 18 is for example made in two parts axially separated by an axial spacer 24. In this embodiment, the bearing 16 is a tapered roller bearing.
The bearing 16 is further provided with sealing means 26, 28 at the two axial ends. The sealing means 26, 28 close a radial space defined between the inner ring 18 and the outer ring 20. The rolling elements 22a, 22b are arranged in said sealed radial space.
The wagon adapter 14 is fixed to the outer ring 20 by its radially inner side or its side towards the bearing seat 30 and is mounted inside the bogie frame by its radially outer side or its side towards the frame seat 32.
The shaft 12 includes a pin 12a and a dust cover having a cylindrical surface 12b whose diameter is greater than the diameter of the pin 12a. A concave leave 12c connects the cylindrical surface 12b to the pin 12a. The inner ring 18 of the bearing is mounted on the pin 12a.
As illustrated, the wagon axle 10 further comprises a support ring 34 having an internal surface 34a intended to come into contact radially with the external surface of the shaft 12, at the level of the side of the leave 12c and for come into axial contact with the inner ring 18 of the bearing 16. Consequently, the inner surface 34a of the support ring 34 has a rounded shape, almost complementary to that of the fillet 12c.
The wagon axle 10 also includes a tip assembly 38. The tip assembly 38 includes the tip 38a intended to constitute a stop element in the case of a translation to the left (relative in FIG. 2) of the shaft 12 with respect to the internal ring 18. Consequently, the end piece 38a is reliably fixed to the pin 12 by means of three end screws 38b and comes into axial contact with the ring internal 18 of bearing 16.
As illustrated in detail in Figure 1, the wagon adapter 14 comprises an adapter body 40 provided with two lateral channels 42. In Figure 1, a single channel 42 is illustrated, the adapter body 40 comprising another lateral channel on the opposite lateral side. Each of the lateral channels 42 is delimited axially by a pair of opposite ears 42b, 42c and by a lateral guide surface 42a perpendicular to said ears. Each side channel 42 has a U-shape and is intended to engage an ear of a jaw (not shown) of the bogie frame, so as to act as an insertion guide between the adapter and the frame bogie.
The body 40 of the wagon adapter 14 further comprises two front surfaces 46, 48, the inner surface 30 acting as a bearing seat in radial contact with the outer ring 20 of the bearing 16, and the outer surface 32 acting as a frame seat in radial contact with the bogie frame.
The internal surface 30 has a concave shape of constant radius so as to rest on the external cylindrical surface of the external ring 20 of the bearing 16.
The front surfaces 46, 48 are respectively provided with a first and a second front flange 50, 52 oriented radially inwards. The flanges 50, 52 project radially inwards relative to the internal surface 30. The flanges 50, 52 are axially opposite one another. The flanges 50, 52 define with the internal surface 30 a housing for the outer ring 20 of the bearing 16. The outer ring 20 is disposed axially between said flanges 50, 52.
The adapter body 40 is made of metal by any suitable process, for example by casting. For example, the body 40 is made of steel or cast iron.
According to the invention, the lateral guide surfaces 42a of the lateral channels are curved, in cross section through a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation X10 of the bearing 16. In the illustrated embodiment, the guide surfaces lateral 42a are cylindrical. Alternatively, the lateral guide surfaces 42a can be spherical.
The bogie frame comprises jaw ears engaged with the lateral channels 42 of the wagon adapter 14, and in abutment against said lateral guide surfaces 42a. In the case of a relative misalignment between the bogie frame and the bearing 16, said bogie frame can pivot on the curved lateral guide surfaces 42a. Said misalignment is thus compensated. The wagon adapter 14 cannot move relative to the bearing 16.
Advantageously, the outer surface 32 of the wagon adapter 14 is also curved. In the illustrated embodiment, the external surface 32, in cross section through the axis of rotation X10 of the bearing 16, is cylindrical. Alternatively, the outer surface 32 may be spherical.
The bogie frame includes a lower surface in radial abutment against said outer surface 32 of the wagon adapter 14. In the case of a relative misalignment between the bogie frame and the bearing 16, said frame The bogie can also pivot on the curved outer surface 32. The wagon adapter 14 includes curved contact surfaces 42a, 32 with the bogie frame along two directions.
Alternatively (not shown), the internal surfaces of the opposite ears 42b, 42c of lateral channels 42, in cross section through a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation X10 of the bearing 16, are curved. For example, said surfaces can be cylindrical or spherical.
It should be noted that the embodiments illustrated and described have been provided solely by way of indicative and nonlimiting examples and that modifications, combinations and variants are possible within the scope of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated on the basis of a rolling bearing provided with at least one row of rolling elements arranged radially between the inner and outer rings. Alternatively, the bearing can be a plain bearing or a sliding bearing comprising one or two rings.
